WEEK4-Studio Exercise

1.A matrix of 9 proposals:

-Sun(toggle switch):
a single shade that can be present or absent covering the obeject.

-Sun(incremental slider):
Several panels join together to form a shape like a sensu and vary dynamically to provide 3 levels of shading over the object,

-Sun(infinitesimal slider):
Several panels join together to form a shape like a sensu and they can do rotation on their own axis vary dynamically in rotation angle.

-Wind(toggle switch):
a (or more) window/s that can be open or close to let or to prevent wind come inside building.

-Wind(incremental slider):
a (or more) sliding window/s that could be adjusted to leave different opening space let wind in depend on different levels of wind(low/medium/high).

-Wind(infinitesimal slider):
a (or more) window/s that alter its overall shape by using holes that vary dynamically in size.

-Rain(toggle switch):
a single panel with an angle at top that can be present or absent covering the object.

-Rain(incremental slider):
a single panel or more panels at top bended and come together to covering the object.

-Rain(infinitesimal slider);
a single panel at top(or two panels join together) which its slope can be adjusted depend on amount of rain drops covering the object.

2. 3 of these proposals and hand sketch a storyboard for each one that select:

WEEK2-Studio Exercise

  1. Identify how the understanding of "home" has changed over time-In around 150 years ago, "home" is a place who shares with somebody for staying. However, in nowadays, "home" has became ownership of someone, or it could be say it is a property belongs to someone.
  2. Write a description of the concept of home-A home is a dwelling-place used as a permanent or semi-permanent residence for an individual or family. It could be a house, apartment, or other building, or alternatively a mobile home. Home is a place to let people live in and have daily activities, like, sleeping, eating, washing and so on. So you don't need to stay outside and have no idea where to go. Home is place could provide your identities, and also a sense of belonging.
  3. Conduct research on own clients. Consider these issues:
  • Who has been affected? How have they been affected?
  • What are their needs and vulnerabilities?
  • Are they in an urban or rural location? What housing existed before the natural disaster?
  • How did it deal with the division of spaces, privacy, security, climate control?
  • What are the climatic conditions? Cold climate? Warm, humid climate? Hot, dry climate?
  • Do those displaced dwellers have cultural or religious traditions which influence their apparel, day to day activities, or social interactions?
 4. Discuss how current design proposal address my client-One couple with two children
 5. Select 1 of the 7 principles of universal design presented in the lecture and use it to develop your design proposal further-Equitable Use: the design useful and marketble to people with diverse abilities

WEEK1-Independent Stdudy

  • 3 short statements of describing 3 concepts of "home"
  1. "I feel comfortable and secure. I am at home. Sleep comes quickly."-This is a feeling exactly same as me when I am at home. Home makes me comfortable as I have no limit to do anything that I want to do and no one would obstruct. Home makes me secure as this is a place belongs to me and only people belong to this home could come in this place.This is a place I can eat, wash, sleep etc. which becomes a significant part of my life.
  2. "The boundaries of home seemingly extend beyond its walls to the neighborhood, even the suburb,town or city. Home is place but it is also a space inhabited by family,people,things and belongings-a familiar, if not comfortable space where particular activities and relationships are lived. In my account home is a virtual place, a repository for memories of the lived spaces."-Home is a place I can meet up with families and friends, celebrates birthdays&festivals, relax myself like watch my favorite actor's movie, listen blues and read magazine.Or, even do nothing just sleep for whole day. Sometimes, the place of home is changed, for example, I moved to a new house when I was 12 years old.Things have been changed in new house, new furnishings, new neighbors...however, this is a new place I live in, it's still my home which is a place I have a sense of belonging.
  3. "The home is a major political background-for feminists, who see it in the crucible of gender domination; for liberals, who identify it with personal autonomy and a challenge to state power, for socialists, who approach it as a challenge to collective life and the ideal of a planned and egalitarian social order."-Home is not a only political background, it's also a religion background. If there is one person in family believes in god, this person can affect other family member by his/her conversations and behaviors in daily life.

WEEK1-Studio Exercise

  • The differences between "Tornadoes" and "Hurricane" and "Cyclone"

-Tornadoes often occurs in the land, however Hurricane and Cyclone need a large body of water to form(like and an ocean), cannot form over land, once they get over land, they start to die.
-They happen in different areas, Hurricanes come from the Atlantic ocean and Cyclone occur in the Pacific ocean.
-Hurricane and Cyclone are type of tropical storms, they can produce extremely high speed winds, tornadoes etc.
-Tornadoes only lasts a few minutes at most, however Hurricane and Cyclone can last very long time.
